Training to Combat Money Laundering
Services delivered
The Central Bank of Congo (BCC) commissioned SETYM International to strengthen its teams’ skills in combating money laundering, terrorist financing and fraudulent practices.
Organised in Kinshasa, this programme aimed to improve the BCC’s practices so that it could fully perform its role in supervising the financial sector, reduce risks and strengthen the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s credibility with international institutions.
Two training pathways were offered to 40 staff members: the first for 26 supervisors from the fraud department and the second for 14 new recruits. The assignment ran from 9 December 2024 to 20 June 2025 and was delivered by Adiba Jawad, consultant.
The training covered the context and recommendations of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), international anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing (AML/CFT) standards, and their application to the BCC’s activities.
Participants consolidated their knowledge through practical exercises to design an AML/CFT framework and draft a practical guide. The introductory pathway also covered the global AML/CFT context, its history, key concepts and stakeholders.
Specific objectives
- Master international anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing (AML/CFT) standards.
- Detect unusual transactions.
- Carry out AML/CFT controls.
Participant feedback
- This training was very useful for me. I gained a better understanding of how to identify, assess and manage the risks associated with money laundering and terrorist financing in my day-to-day work. Above all, I learned the importance of the risk-based approach, which enables us to classify customers according to their level of risk and adapt our controls accordingly. For example, I’ll now be able to step up vigilance on high-risk customers such as PEPs or those using a lot of cash. I’ve also discovered practical tools, such as the vulnerability assessment grid, compliance checklists and report templates that I can adapt to my institution. This will help me to better track suspicious transactions and write clearer, more structured reports.
- I really appreciated Adiba JAWAD’s performance. She masters her subject perfectly and knows how to explain things simply and concretely, even when the concepts are technical. She kept our attention from start to finish, giving clear examples and answering all questions with precision. I also appreciated her practical, straightforward approach, which was very much in line with our realities in the field. Frankly, she’s a competent, professional and pleasant trainer to follow.
- The trainer’s methodology generated considerable interest and made the session lively. We were never bored, and the explanations were very clear. Discussions and debates based on practical cases helped us to understand better.
